AdGuard and uBlock Origin are both excellent browser ad blockers, but they have different strengths. uBlock Origin is more efficient and more powerful for advanced users. AdGuard has a friendlier interface and adds anti-phishing and anti-tracking features. Here’s how to choose.
uBlock Origin: The Most Efficient Ad Blocker

uBlock Origin is widely considered the most efficient ad blocker available. It uses less memory and CPU than any comparable ad blocker while blocking more ads and trackers. The developer’s philosophy focuses on efficiency above all else.

Memory comparison: uBlock Origin typically uses 5-15MB of browser memory. AdGuard uses 30-60MB. Adblock Plus uses 50-70MB. For users on older computers or with many browser tabs open, this efficiency difference matters.
uBlock Origin in advanced mode gives you fine-grained control over what loads on each page. You can block specific network requests, scripts, frames, and other elements. Advanced users who want maximum control prefer uBlock Origin precisely because of this depth.
AdGuard Browser Extension: More Features, Friendlier

The AdGuard browser extension adds features beyond ad blocking. Anti-tracking protection prevents websites from tracking you across the web. An anti-phishing module checks URLs against known phishing databases. A stealth mode feature reduces the amount of information websites can collect about your browser and system.
The interface is more visual and user-friendly than uBlock Origin’s. You can see what was blocked on each page with a simple click on the extension icon, and enabling or disabling blocking for specific sites is straightforward.
The Manifest V3 Problem in Chrome
Google changed the API that Chrome extensions use for content blocking (from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3). MV3 limits the number of blocking rules and changes how blocking works in ways that reduce effectiveness. This affects all ad blockers in Chrome, but uBlock Origin’s “lite” version for MV3 is significantly less powerful than the full MV2 version.
In Firefox, Manifest V2 is still supported and uBlock Origin runs at full power. This is one of the main reasons privacy advocates recommend Firefox over Chrome for ad blocking in 2026.

AdGuard’s browser extension has adapted better to MV3 limitations through a different technical approach. In Chrome with MV3, AdGuard’s blocking effectiveness is generally better than uBlock Origin Lite. In Firefox with MV2, uBlock Origin is more effective.
Which Should You Install?
Firefox users: uBlock Origin is the better choice. Full MV2 API support means maximum blocking effectiveness, and uBlock Origin’s efficiency advantage is clear.
Chrome users: AdGuard’s browser extension or uBlock Origin Lite. AdGuard adapts better to MV3 limitations. If you’re in Chrome specifically for YouTube ad blocking, note that uBlock Origin Lite on Chrome is also less effective at this than the full version on Firefox.
Both browsers: uBlock Origin on Firefox + AdGuard on Chrome is a reasonable combination if you use both browsers regularly.
